LIPUTANHARIAN.CO.ID — Resident Evil director Zach Cregger recently participated in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit. While trailers have teased several easter eggs for players, Cregger revealed a deeper, game-inspired influence on his horror movie: its third-person viewpoint. He stated that cinematically, the games provided the film's biggest inspiration.
"I feel like the biggest inspiration for this was the games, and I mean cinematically," Cregger explained during the session, as highlighted by YouTuber Troy Hill Talks Movies. "I'm not talking about the content of the movie. I'm talking about the visual language of the movie."
Cregger argues that his generation's visual tastes are shaped as much by video games as by films. He grew up playing games just as often as he watched movies, fostering an ingrained appreciation for specific camera perspectives. This background informs his directorial approach.
He elaborated on the mechanics of this perspective: "There's something that is ingrained now about this third-person camera and this first-person thing where you really are learning the space as the character learns the space, and you feel much more immersed in their perspective because you are." Consequently, making a Resident Evil film involved following a character on a journey, making it obvious for him to utilize the games' proven visual vocabulary.
To translate this to film, Cregger choreographed scenes to emulate the gameplay. The goal was to "train the viewer" early on, preparing them for the unique visual journey ahead. This approach suggests a horror film designed to be experienced, not just watched.
